The Nyumba Ya Thanzi
Nutrition Centre in Senga Bay is a project designed and run by Richard Moyo. Richard found out that he was HIV positive in 2006 and wanted to set up a project to help other people in his community living with HIV and to combat stigma.
After Richard and a team of local builders built the centre it opened its doors
in February 2008 and now assists 35 HIV positive children
ensuring they have highly nutritious food, access to medical attention
and emotional support. They also have a woman's group, and do voluntary testing and counselling and home visits. Richard works with a nutrition advisor, woman's coordinator, teacher, 2 cooks and a watchman at the
centre. Richard and his team have done an impressive trust of gaining the trust of people in their community, many of whom are incredibly scared of revealing their or their children's HIV status or seeking help. The project has developed links with local health care
providers and HIV support organisations who work with the Centre
to provide training, community outreach and medical services.
Richard and the other staff at the centre are passionate about their project. They have gained the trust of their community, which is crucial when working on this difficult issue and can see the positive impact of the work they do around them.
We
hope you will join us in supporting the incredible job that Richard Moyo and his team are doing at this inspiring community
